Without Water: Cooling Horses in a Drought

California is in its fourth year of severe drought, and there is hardly any relief in sight.  For most Californians, water usage restrictions are affecting their every day life in small ways.  For Californians who own horses, the restrictions are more limiting and can create some big problems for our four legged athletes.

There are plenty of water restrictions already in place for farmers and stable owners, who have been finding ways to conserve water so as to not tap out wells that are affected by the drought.  Horses need fresh water to drink, so it’s important that barn owners prioritize drinking water over water for other purposes.  Many farms have stopped watering pastures and arenas, and hay prices have skyrocketed, leading to a big problem of finding affordable feed sources.

For the everyday equestrian, one big problem is cooling off your horse after a ride in the California sunshine.  Cooling horses in a drought has to be approached in a way that doesn’t involve wasting gallons of water from a hose as you wet down your horse and scrape the excess off.  Luckily, Equi Cool Down’s products do not require a lot of water and you can cool off your horse’s body, legs, and neck with less than ONE bucket of water!  Even more helpful, the water doesn’t have to be fresh, cool, right from the tap water.  You can pull some water from a water trough or from buckets that you’re going to dump and scrub.  Any temperature water will cool your horse down with the Equi Cool Down wraps!

Watch the videos above to see how you can use your Equi Cool Down body wrap, leg wraps and neck wrap with almost no water at all.  What you can’t see is that the wraps stay damp in their carrying bag, allowing you to use just a spray bottle of water to dampen them again the next time you need them, therefore reducing your water usage even more.

We all know how important it is that our horses cool down quickly after exercise, because heat can damage tendons, ligaments and muscles.  We also know how important it is to conserve water when California is in a crisis.  Equi Cool Down products are exactly the solution you’ve been looking for – cooling horses in a drought doesn’t have to be a challenge – in fact, now it’s easier than ever!
